Controversial Kilinochchi Road Nameplate – Action under the Prevention of Terrorism Act?

The Kilinochchi Police today launched an investigation into the nameplate of a road opened in the name of a rehabilitated ex-combatant in the Santapuram area in Kilinochchi.

The road owned by Karachi Pradeshiya Sabha was named as Vetriveedi and opened on 28.03.2021.

Following the instructions of the Terrorism Prevention Unit, the Kilinochchi Police today summoned the Chairman of the Karachi Pradeshiya Sabha to investigate the matter. He said the inquest, which was called at 8 a.m. today, lasted about an hour.

Commenting on the investigations, he said,

Meanwhile, Karachi Pradeshiya Sabha chairperson Arunachalam Velamalikithan said that during the investigations that took place today, the owner of the name was a rehabilitated ex-combatant and after being rehabilitated and socialized, his name was mentioned by the public for his work in the forefront of social activities.

He stated that the road had not been opened by the Pradeshiya Sabha in accordance with the Pradeshiya Sabha Act or through a gazette notification and that he had attended the event as a representative of the people at an event organized by the public to name the street voluntarily.

He said the LTTE had acted to re-establish itself under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and would take action if it failed to take action to remove the road sign.

Therefore, he said he would take action accordingly.
